Historic Meeting with Relative of HMS Perseus Submarine Sailor in Poros, Kefalonia!

In the context of the memorial events organised by the Municipality of Argostoli in collaboration with British and Greek friends of the historic HMS Perseus submarine group, a particularly moving historic meeting took place on Tuesday morning in Poros, Kefalonia.

Mr. Ron Dickerson from Cornwall, nephew of sailor Ronald Dickerson (Ordinary Telegraphist), who lost his life at the age of just 18 when the British submarine HMS Perseus struck an Italian mine and sank off Mavratas in southern Kefalonia in December 1941, visited our island together with his wife Maureen. The couple is staying in Poros, hosted by the travel agency of Spiros Katsouris, in order to attend the memorial events.

The meeting was held at the Community Hall of Poros, where Ron Dickerson and his group spoke with the Deputy Mayor of Eleios-Pronnoi & Tourism Nikos Kourkoumelis and the President of Poros Odysseas Galiatsatos. Afterwards, the group moved to a popular café in the village, where discussions continued.

Also present at the meeting were:

- Andy Walters and his wife Lesley, who has been laying a wreath every year for many years at the Submarine Memorial in Sarakiniko.

- The administrators of the “HMS Perseus” Facebook group and key organisers of the events: Helen Harrison, Chris Gaylor, Dianne Seddon, Keith Seddon, and the undersigned.

The discussions focused both on the organisation of the anniversary events and on the history of the legendary submarine and its crew.

The memorial events will take place on Friday 19 June:

- 11:00 a.m. – Ceremonies at the HMS Perseus Submarine Memorial in Sarakiniko, Poros.

- 7:00 p.m. – Event at the Cultural Centre of Skala.

We look forward to seeing you all there, as we honour together the memory of the heroic sailors of HMS Perseus!
