Prime Minister Mitsotakis in Kefalonia: Priority for the hospital, the Argostoli-Poros road, a museum and public housing in Lixouri - The Prime Minister's program in detail

Written by Andreas Konstantatos

On Tuesday at 9.30 in the morning, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be in Kefalonia, on his first visit as Prime Minister.

There hasn't been a prime minister on our island since 2016 when Alexis Tsipras visited us to inaugurate the new Argostoli school complex, attend an artistic program and participate in a meeting on the progress of the damage restoration projects from the 2014 earthquake.

Now the visit of Mr. Mitsotakis is of great importance for the course of Kefalonia and for the infrastructure projects that the island needs, as a serious and attractive tourist destination. Expectations are high.

Projects that have been left behind for decades, damage restoration projects since the earthquakes of 2014. The Argostoli hospital that suffers with its shortcomings for the citizens, the dangerous road network and the Argostoli-Poros road, the archaeological museum that looks "haunted" in the middle of the city, all these will be put on the table with the aim of immediately launching their solutions. That is why the Prime Minister will be accompanied by, among others, the Deputy Minister of Health Ms. Mina Gaga, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Giorgos Karagiannis and of course the local MP Panagis Kappatos.

The Prime Minister will make announcements about the road network and the reconstruction of the Argostoli-Poros road immediately after his arrival at the Krania junction.

Then he will visit the hospital in Argostoli and the new ward "Vergoti". The hospital that has deficiencies in infrastructure and in medical and nursing staff. Despite the efforts that have been made in recent years, the problems remain and funds are still needed to restore the damage from the 2014 earthquake. Eight years have passed since then and its walls are still full of cracks from the seismic vibrations.

All these and other issues will be discussed in two meetings, in the  Regional Building and in the town hall of Argostoli. Among them will be the creation of the new archaeological museum of the city, as The Minister of Culture Ms. Mendoni is proceeding with the relevant procedures and with the competent bodies the changes to the layout plan required for the construction of the new Museum from the ground up in accordance with the modern requirements and specifications. A Museum to house the very important culture of Kefalonia that eight years ago was left...homeless!

Lixouri and Agia Efimia
The Prime Minister will then visit Lixouri, the "Hyperion" club, the home of people with special needs, and then the public housing that has suffered enormous damage from the 2014 earthquake. The aim is to finally provide a solution to the great housing problem of the poor families of people in Paliki (Lixouri) who lost their houses in the earthquake, through their repair or reconstruction.

Since Kefalonia was not affected, in recent years only by the earthquakes but also by the Storm "Iano", Mr. Mitsotakis will also visit Agia Efimia to see "in person" the progress of the anti-flood works and the works in the port of the beautiful village.

The single seat district in parliament of Kefalonia and the moaning

In any case, the Prime Minister's visit to our island also has political dimensions as the government has entered its fourth year of governance and the pre-election campaign has informally begun.

Mr. Mitsotakis has already intensified his visits to the region and in each town he talks with the residents, with the shopkeepers, in order to collect the climate that prevails in the society and to hear first-hand the views of the citizens.

He will do the same in Argostoli, where a meeting in a cafe and discussion with the residents is planned.

But Mr. Mitsotakis will have his mind elsewhere. In the party organs of Kefalonia there have been recent signs of intra-party disagreements and tensions between various intra-party groups.

Realizing the importance of this single-seat district, the prime minister and his colleagues will attempt to absorb the tensions and grumbling and unite the party for the crucial battle of spring 2023.

We will see how they will do it in the future...
