Poros is a small picturesque town (which is between peaceful green hills and beautiful beaches) in Kefalonia that you definitely want to stay in or at least visit and explore while vacationing on our hospitable island. Should you do this, you surely will not be the first or the last.
Poros has a history that, as the prehistoric She-Dragon (Drakena) Cave above the gorge of the town and the Ancient Royal Tomb of Tzanata (which dates to the period of Odysseus and the conquest of Troy) to name a few prove, spans at least 7.5 millenniums!
However, Poros is not only about ancient history. Poros today is the main sea gateway to the island of Kefalonia and one of the best and rising tourism destinations here.
How could the above not be the case with the many tourist yachts that choose to lay anchor in its wonderful and clean port where there are many restaurants, coffee shops and shops to choose from. Yet, the vast majority of people who stay in Poros choose as their vacation homes among the vast amount of value for money and quality hotels and rooms that this town has to offer.
From Poros you can choose to stay and have fun on its many amazingly beautiful and clean beaches (among which the Aragia beach just won for yet another year a prestigious "Blue Flag" award for its excellence.)
You can also choose to go for short or even longer walks to places such as the historic "Submarine Perseus" World World Two Memorial, the historic and hospitable first Monastery of Kefalonia at the nearby Atros mountain, a walk on the amazing secluded beaches at the two sides of Poros (Limenia and Akrotiri) among many other places.
If one wants to indulge in the earthly pleasures of life Poros Square and virtually the entire beachfront areas of Poros have also many lovely quality restaurants, coffee shops and bars and other places to choose from!
If you're looking to find something that you can't find anywhere else try visiting the collection of Stone Sculptures and other so called "Arte Povere" items at the hidden very edge of the Aragia beach of Poros (at the Tripes beach!)
If you're looking to explore the island of Kefalonia or go even further away in Poros you can find all that you need. It has cheap car rentals, daily cruises or speed boat rentals for other areas of Kefalonia or the neighbouring islands (Ithaca, Zakinthos or even Lefkada!) In the Summer period it even has regular public bus and all year round taxi services!
Poros is also a great place to go fishing, has a great view to the island of Ithaca and it's split in two by a river (which is dry most of the Summer.)
Poros also has amazing and fun festivities mostly during Summer but also all year round!
In a final few last words the town of Poros on Kefalonia is also blessed with a unique, because of the gorge, refreshing Summer breeze, has amazing natural beauty and friendly habitants and in a nutshell is great for safe, pleasant and adventurous Summer holidays especially by couples or families!
