The Celebration of the Union of the Ionian Islands Took Place with Splendor and Solemnity in Skala, Kefalonia!

With brilliance, solemnity, and a large crowd of Greeks and tourists, the 162nd celebration of the Union of the Ionian Islands with Mother Greece was held in the beautiful Skala of our Kefalonia!

The festive events began at the Holy Church of Saint Gerasimos in Slala, where a Doxology was held, officiated by Archimandrite Fotios Gavrielatos, along with priests Father Stavros Zapantis and the celebrating Father Konstantinos Zapantis, in the presence of many officials and faithful believers.

This was followed by a Memorial Prayer in Revolution Square of 1849 in Scala, hosted by Rubina Kritikou, a teacher at the village’s Primary School. The excellent festive speech of the day was delivered by Ioanna Papadimitriou, educator at the General Lyceum of Pastra.

Wreaths were laid at the monument by Deputy Mayor of Elios Pronnoi Nikos Kourkoumelis, President of the Skala Community Giorgos Travlos, President of Poros Kefalonia Odysseas Galiatsatos, as well as other Community Presidents and associations from Elios Pronnoi, Municipal Councillor and President of DIAD.EY.A.D.K. Argyris Gavrielatos, Director of DIAD.EY.A.D.K. Gerasimos Simotas, representatives of the Security Forces and the Volunteer Forest Protection Group of Elios Pronnoi, and students from the local schools.

Special mention should be made of the recitation of a poem by a student from the Primary School of Poros, as well as by a descendant of the Radicals Panagis Metaxas!

This was followed by a minute of silence and the playing of our National Anthem, in which the children — who represent the hopeful future of our land — and all those present participated.

Finally, during the traditional parade of students and the Cultural Association of Poros Kefalonia “O Pronisos” along the central commercial-tourist street of kcala, everyone received warm applause from officials, parents, and the rest of the Greek and foreign spectators!

Many years to the Ionian Islands and our Greece and to all those celebrating this day!
