With deep emotion and in a spirit of historical remembrance, the commemorative plaque bearing the names of all 60 fallen crew members of the British Submarine HMS Perseus, along with the name of its sole survivor, John Capes, was unveiled on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, at the Sarakiniko Monument in Poros, Kefalonia.
This initiative was made possible thanks to the immediate response and coordinated efforts of the Municipality of Argostoli. We extend our warmest congratulations and sincere thanks to Mayor Theofilos Michalatos, Deputy Mayor of Eleios-Pronnoi & Tourism Nikos Kourkoumelis, and the President of Poros Odysseas Galiatsatos, who turned this long-overdue tribute into reality.
The placement of the plaque fulfills a longstanding request, especially from British visitors to the island. For many years, they have come to the site to pay their respects, laying wreaths, flowers, and personal mementos in honor of the sailors who fought and gave their lives during the Second World War.
